Chuck is the call sign of Chanell Howard Brewer

She is a civilian, but you will not address her as one. Hairstylist, colorist, educator, artist, writer, and lifelong maker with more than twenty-five years behind the chair. Call sign Charlie.

She comes from the Lowcountry of South Carolina, where beauty was never particularly interested in being perfect. It grew in marshes, hung from trees, weathered, rusted, bloomed, and kept going. That way of seeing things followed her.

Chuck believes God is the first Creator.

Before there was an artist, there was creation. Before we learned to make beautiful things, God made us—and gave us eyes to notice, hands to work, and the imagination to make something from what He already provided. For Chuck, creativity is less about claiming something as her own and more about answering that gift with gratitude.

Hair became one of her first languages.

Over a career spanning more than two decades, her work has moved between the salon, editorial, fashion, education, and beauty. Her path has included Vogue Italia, New York Fashion Week, Miami Swim Week, Paris Fashion Week, The Tyra Banks Show, The Knot, Durham Magazine, Chapel Hill Magazine, the Umstead editorial campaign, and professional work and education with brands including RUSK, Living Proof, CHANEL, and Olaplex.

But the résumé has never been the whole story.

Chuck photographs things. She writes. She makes art. She notices rooms, objects, clothes, old buildings, faces, color, texture, and the strange little details most people walk past. She is interested in the evidence of a life being lived—not necessarily a life being perfected.

That philosophy follows her behind the chair, too. The goal isn’t to manufacture another person. It is to look carefully at the one already sitting there.
